Course Description:
This physical and health education course offers students the opportunity to develop leadership, organizational skills, physical fitness, and a connection to nature. Wilderness canoe tripping is a central component of this course, and will be supported by SCS Faculty expertise in the area. During the classroom component, students will plan and implement a budget, learn about expedition nutrition and apply that to the development of a menu for the canoe trip, and practice hands-on skills such as navigation and route selection. During the outdoor component of the course, centred on short practice trips and culminating in a 4-day overnight wilderness canoe trip, students will build physical fitness through immersive nature-based activities such as hiking, flatwater canoeing, and portaging. Throughout the course, students will take on leadership roles and be directly responsible for the planning and organization of the culminating trip.
Note: Includes opportunity for an ORCKA certification; expedition meets requirements for Silver or Gold Duke of Edinburgh's Award.
Prerequisite: PPL1O. Must have the ability to swim. Successful completion of swim tests required for trip participation.
